Diet!
Fireflies are omnivores which means they eat both meat and plants. The firefly larvae (a.k.a the glowworm) eat small insects, snails, slugs, small dead animals and other earth materials. The adult fireflies also feed on small insects as well as pollen and other parts of flowers. Some species of fireflies don't eat anything at all while others eat their own larvae as well as other insect larvae. some female fireflies attract a mate so that they can eat them! while fireflies prey on other insects, fireflies are quite disgusting and sometimes poisonous to other bugs because of a group of steroids. The firefly warns predators that they don't taste good by flashing his/her light.
Behavior!
The flashing that the fireflies make is called bioluminescence. It is caused by a chemical reaction where they give off cold light or light that has no UV or infrared rays. This light is used to attract the opposite gender of firefly. The males fly into the air and gives off his stunning light pattern while the females lay in a stationary position. If a female finds a male she likes she will respond by giving off a light flash of her own. Each species of fireflies has their own light pattern so that fireflies can determine their own species. fireflies are not harmful to people. they do not bite or sting.
