Life Cycle!
Fireflies complete the process of metamorphosis. This is how it goes. As explained before in the behaviour part of this website the male attracts the female by making a light pattern. This Is how the life cycle is started. The females lay eggs in the summer. The eggs will glow and will take around 28 days to hatch and turn into Larva. the larva shelter in the mud and eventually turn into pupa. The firefly pupa will lay on its back while it grows its legs, eyes, abdomen, antennae and more. Then the pupa will turn into an adult firefly and the whole process is continued again.
Species!
Fireflies are in the classification Lampyridae and are in the order coleoptera. as you may know there are over 2000 species of fireflies. There are three categories of fireflies that have a flash and they are called photinus, photuris and pyractomena. the photinus is about half an inch long and has a yellow-green flash. the pyractomena is about the same size as the photinus but has an amber coloured flash. the photuris is the biggest of the three genera and have a dark green flash. there are a lot more species than this, including ones that glow, ones that don't flash or glow and ones that use pheromones.
